Why Can't I Get the Warm Home Discount with a Secondary Meter?

At Topupmeters Ltd, we operate your prepayment meter and process your top-ups, but we are not your energy supplier. Because you use a secondary meter, you are buying your energy through an intermediary (like your landlord), rather than directly from a utility company.

Here is why secondary meters do not qualify for the Warm Home Discount:

  • No Direct Supplier Relationship: The government pays the Warm Home Discount directly to energy suppliers so they can credit their customers' accounts. Because your landlord holds the actual account with the energy supplier, you do not meet the government's criteria.
  • Meter Setup: Your Topupmeter is a "secondary" sub-meter installed downstream from the property's primary billing meter. Government schemes are designed for the bill-payer of the primary meter.

What about the eligibility letter I received? You may have received a government letter stating you qualify for the discount based on your benefits. While generally true, these automated letters assume you have a direct contract with an energy supplier. They unfortunately do not account for secondary sub-meter setups.

Where to Find Help

If you are struggling with energy costs, here is who you can contact:

  • Your Landlord: As your direct energy provider, they are your first point of contact. Ask them if they can pass on any government relief they receive for the primary meter or if they can offer a payment plan.
  • Citizens Advice: Provides free, independent guidance on managing energy bills and finding financial assistance.
  • Fuel Bank Foundation: A charity that provides emergency fuel vouchers for people in crisis who cannot afford to top up their prepayment meters.
