Why it's time to ditch the old ways of managing sub-meters

Managing utilities is tough when your hardware works against you. While our Topup 4G Smart Meter and older coin, card, or manual code-entry meters are all MID Certified for accuracy, that is where the similarities end. Here is why upgrading saves time, money, and hassle.

Connectivity and Top-ups

  • Topup 4G Smart Meters: Connected via 4G LTE-M. Online payments are applied to the meter instantly without the tenant touching a thing.
  • Older Meters: Zero connectivity. Tenants must manually type in long token codes or use physical cash and proprietary cards.

Remote Monitoring and Security

  • Topup 4G Smart Meters: Sends half-hourly balance updates and low-balance email alerts. It instantly flags tampering, like zero movement or lost communications.
  • Older Meters: No remote monitoring or alerts. If a meter is bypassed, you won't know without a physical inspection.

Transaction Fees

  • Topup 4G Smart Meters: Highly cost-efficient, charging only a minor card processing fee.
  • Older Meters: Tenants can pay 10-15% in fees just to generate a manual code, while cash systems carry heavy operational costs for collection and banking.

Tariff Updates

  • Topup 4G Smart Meters: Tariffs are updated online and applied instantly over the air.
  • Older Meters: New rates must be manually built into the next top-up code a tenant buys, or require a physical visit to adjust the meter.
