Why HMOs are upgrading to smart prepayment meters
Landlords of houses of multiple occupation can have sub-meters fitted to recover their energy costs. Sometimes energy might be already included in the rent agreement. However this isn’t a fair or accurate way to recharge for electricity. There is always a risk the tenant will use electric carelessly, thereby leaving you out of pocket for exorbitant utility bills.
Where a property has been split into units or a part of a building is being sub-let, the landlord can have an electrician install smart prepayment secondary meters for charging electricity, gas and even water.
With the Topupmeters system, tenants pay for energy online. Topups are made using a card payment and instantly sent to the meter over the GSM mobile phone network. Each meter has its own SIM card for receiving topups. Energy usage is monited remotely from the landlord web portal.
Why go to cashless prepayment?
With secure online payments its easy to keep track of how much is being spent, by who, and when a payment has been made. Tenants benefit from the added convenience of being able to topup online at anytime for between £5 and £100.
Card payments are handled securely by Stripe, a large payment processing company similar to Paypal. Money gets paid out every few days to a bank account.
No risk of them, no money handling, no administration costs.
